Da Villa Manin a Villa Savorgnan Ottelio

For a small tour among the naturalistic and artistic beauties of Medio Friuli let’s start from the greatness of Villa Manin in Passariano nearby Codroipo: it’s located at just 30 km away from the Outlet and it’s considered to be one of the best examples of 1700 Venetian art, thanks to the Manin family efforts throughout the centuries that were able to create a special pleasure place that competed with the most important royal courts of Europe. It’s not by coincidence that a French architect, apprentice of Le Notre, the designer of the Versailles gardens for the Sun King, Louis XIV, was called, during the Baroque age, to design the big park in the north of the Villa. Just two km away in S.Martino (Codroipo) we can find the vintage coaches museum that shows 44 restored coaches perfectly functional that belonged to the Tomasi di Lampedusa family and the Russian Czar. Carrying on along the beautiful rural villages surrounded by mulberry woods and clear spring waters such as Muscletto, Sterpo, Sivigliano e Flambruzzo (castle and park visits are available here during the cultural heritage days: the origins date back to the XIII century) we reach the magical village of Ariis, located by the spectacular side of the Stella river. The river is one of the naturalistic wonders of the Friulian low plain and the core of one of the largest European spring systems as well as one of the richest in biodiversity. The big red bulk of Villa Savorgnan Ottelio rises just on the the river bend: it’s publicly owned and includes paths, small streams, cycle lanes and rest areas that cross the 11 hectare large gardens. Experts say that the Villa was the scenario for the love story that later William Shakespeare celebrated in his most famous novel: Romeo and Juliet. According to historians they were actually Luigi Da Porto and Lucina Savorgnan. It is said that Shakespeare was inspired by the autobiographical story written in 1511 by Da Porto himself.
