Knowing how to match your wardrobe to your time could sound like a tongue twister, but in actual reality, it is a principle that rarely disappoints. We can look at fashion and style as two parallel lines, but old fashioned is not always the most successful choice, and when you add social status to the mixture, what somewhat helps is bearing in mind that was exclusive in the past is second-rate at best today.  Let us take cellphones as an example. Having one was a luxury in the 80s, in the 90s having two was. Nowadays having none is what most people desire. Going back to the wardrobe, men’s wardrobes to be precise, we compiled a list of 10 rules that perfectly apply to today’s time, but are ready to be proved wrong, since we are well aware that the saying “history repeating itself” is always true.

1. Monogrammed shirts: since stylists have taken up marking even underwear with their initials, having your clothes monogrammed is not a sign of refinement and class. A computer sets up embroidery; forget your old lady sitting for hours with patience and craftiness. That is only fashionable in Dubai.
2. Furlane shoe slippers. The velvet ones. They’re okay if you just got out of the hospital, if you feel like the reincarnation of Oscar Wilde, if you wear them in your house. However, if you go out on your bike wearing them or you match them with a suit you’re not modern, you’re a lost cause.
3. Signet rings: if they haven’t been passed down in your family for generations, it makes you look like an old fashioned Marquis; and it’s second only to adding your mother’s maiden name to your last name to sound more sophisticated.
4. Golden buttons on blue blazers. Just no.
5. Unbuttoning your wrist to show that the buttons and the eyelets were hand-stitched is something that you can tell by yourself without showing them off. It made no sense in the past, and it might cost you a friend nowadays.
6. Pulling up the collar of your shirt was something Marella Agnelli did, but the collar was starched and her neck was swan-like. If you’re a regular at the tanning salon and you spend more than an hour a week at the gym you can’t allow yourself to wear it.
7. Having your cuffs rolled up, especially while wearing dress suits in formal occasions. It’s not even a custom in Milan anymore.
8. Shoes without socks during the winter, especially if you define yourself as a no-vax.
9. Pocket handkerchiefs skillfully folded (and learned through a tutorial) uncoupled with a matching tie.
10. Tassels on moccasins. Please, no.
